A Celebration of Passion and Purpose: The Extraordinary Legacy of Philip Broughton

It is with a blend of deep reflection and joyful celebration that we honour the life of Philip Broughton, the founding Master of The Cranwell Bloodhounds. While we mourn his physical absence, we choose to celebrate the indelible mark he left on the Lincolnshire countryside—a legacy defined by thundering hooves, the melodious cry of the pack, and a community built on genuine friendship.

Phil was a man of the soil and a true sportsman. He believed that the thrill of the hunt was a timeless pursuit that belonged to anyone with a brave heart, a steady hand, and an unwavering respect for the hounds.

A Partnership Built on the "Clean Boot"

The Cranwell Bloodhounds did not begin with one person, but with two. Alongside his devoted wife, Wendy, Phil turned a shared dream into a thundering reality. In those early days, it was their combined grit and shared vision that established the pack on the principles of hunting the "clean boot." By training the pack to follow the natural scent of a human runner, Phil and Wendy ensured that the ancient traditions of venery could flourish in harmony with the modern world. Their partnership was the bedrock of the pack: Phil’s intuitive hound work complemented by Wendy’s organisational strength and shared passion. Together, they didn't just build a hunt; they fostered a culture of inclusivity and excellence.

The Heart of the Hunt

Phil will be remembered for far more than his skill in the saddle. He was a man of:

  • Infectious Enthusiasm: He possessed a rare ability to light up a meet, welcoming every rider—from the seasoned heavyweights to the nervous pony clubbers—with the same genuine warmth and a twinkle in his eye.

  • Deep Integrity: He was a fierce protector of hunting’s heritage, ensuring the pack operated with the highest standards of sportsmanship and animal welfare.

  • A Master’s Intuition: To watch Phil with his Bloodhounds was to witness a masterclass. He understood their language, their quirks, and their tireless drive, guiding them with a quiet authority that was earned through years of devotion.

"Phil didn't just lead the way; he invited us all along for the ride of a lifetime. His legacy isn't just in the history of the Lincolnshire fields, but in every hound's bay and every lifelong friendship formed."

The Reins Pass to Steady Hands

In a transition that Phil would have viewed with immense pride and absolute confidence, Wendy Broughton has taken over the reins.

As she steps forward to lead the pack they built together, the spirit of the Cranwell Bloodhounds remains as steadfast as ever. Wendy carries forward not only the Mastership but the very soul of the hunt. Under her guidance, the foundation Phil laid remains secure, and the future of the pack is bright.

We look forward to many more seasons of seeing the "clean boot" hunted across the countryside, knowing that Phil’s influence is woven into every gallop and every successful line.

We ride on in his honour, celebrating a life lived at full cry and a legacy that continues in

the capable hands of the woman who stood by him from the very first day.
